Thomas Shortall

BA(Hons), MSc, DipREBT, C.Psychol
Chartered Counselling Psychologist
BABCP Reg Cognitive Behaviour Therapist
EMDR Europe Practitioner

I completed my BA in pure psychology in 1984 and did post graduate research before coming to London to “see how it would go“ in 1986.
Next year in September I will have been in the UK for 40 years.

I started training in cognitive therapy with a course in behavioural psychotherapy at the Maudsley Hospital in 1988 and I’ve kept my training up since then. I’ve completed a diploma in rational motive behaviour therapy and attended numerous conferences on CBT over the years.

I’ve been registered with the BABCP, the professional body, as a cognitive behaviour therapist since about 1991.

In terms of my development with CBT, this is something that is constantly evolving with new techniques and methods developing all the time. I have had additional training in using CBT to help with trauma.

In terms of my training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) which is a trauma-based therapy, I was one of the first train in the UK and did my level one training with Roger Solomon in Belfast in 2000. I am a Europe registered EMDR therapist and have been for many years.

I’m also a chartered counselling psychologist and have been since the early 90s.

What can I offer you?

First and foremost, I feel that when someone comes into therapy, they need a pair of safe hands to guide them through the difficulties and storms that may exist in their life. I’ve done this for over 35 years with a wide range of people. I would like to think that I can do the same for you. I can draw on my experience of using cognitive behaviour therapy and trauma therapy to try to help to get you there. I have over 3 decades of experience in helping people with depression, anxiety disorders and all types of traumas.

However, as any therapist will tell you, it’s the client in therapy that needs to do a lot of work in helping themselves. The therapist can only guide, influence and direct the person to make the changes they need to make. In terms of trauma work, the client needs to be able to face difficulties that they’ve experienced in the past. The confidence of having two very powerful techniques to help people go through trauma has given me the experience and confidence to try to help to do that with a wide range of traumatic experience.

What to expect?

When you first contact me, we can have a brief talk about your difficulties, and I may email you some resources that may initially help you. This will be even if you decide not to proceed in therapy with me. We will then proceed to have an individual session. This can either be at the clinic in Harrow, or if you’re working during the week, I can see you on Saturdays in central London at Manchester Square.

Therapy sessions are confidential but some bits of information concerning your improvement may need to be relayed to insurance companies if a request for extensions are made.

I am registered with all insurance companies including BUPA, AXA PPP, Vitality, Cigna and others. Ruth, who is the practice manager, will arrange the necessary invoices and correspondence with the insurance companies that need to be done. So, you don’t need to worry about that. She will also send text reminders of the sessions with me which you need to confirm.

If you are self-pay, then I will discuss the self-pay rate with you. You will just need to arrange for payment into the business account. Once that’s done, you’ll sign a contract stating that the sessions are confidential, and what we can expect from each other. Then we are ready to go.
